Thoughts on the Official Magazine – Aion

Aion - the magazine

Today was the official release of Issue One of the Official (digital) magazine for Aion. I decided to subscribe for a year, and I made no hesitation to mention that it was due to in game perks and pre-order items. I signed up before I knew what the magazine would look like, and I had a LOT of people tell me what a horrible idea it was (the magazine in general).

Now that it’s been released, I can talk with a little more clarity.

The first issue contains 102 pages which is a ‘bonus’ for this first issue. The future ones will not be quite so lengthy.

Pros:

  • Absolutely beautiful. Amazing pictures on every single page and the layout is just fantastic. No complaints.
  • LOTS of content. There are over 9 in depth guides for players, granted most of them currently revolve around the new player experience, but for the first issue what else do you really expect.
  • There are videos that have been added into the magazine, and they’ve been added flawlessly. They look incredible, play easily, and they include music. Watching a video in your digital magazine is neat.
  • In game items – although this month was a hat that looks horrible.
  • The articles are very well written, and actually interesting. There is also a little community involvement with guildes of the month and players.
  • Flipping page animation? Neat. Makes it feel more realistic.

Cons:

  • It’s flash driven, and you do not actually GET a copy at all, be it digital or otherwise. The only way you can view it is to go to the aionmagazine.com web site and log in. What happens in 10 years when the site no longer exists or a weekend when you don’t have internet?
  • The images are pretty small, and unless you’re reading it on a super sized monitor, you may have issues. There’s no way to actually enlarge them while browsing the digital magazine.
  • Like all magazines, there are ads.

Other Thoughts:

  • A PDF version of this would be REALLY nice. I’d like to be able to browse random articles on my iphone, or whatever device I happen to be using.

Do I think it was worth the cost? I do. Especially if the quality of the articles and guides keeps up throughout the next issues. Sure it’s quite “new” to me and I’m not exactly sold on the whole “pay us money but you don’t really get anything tangible” but it’s still an hour or two of entertainment and a lot of knowledge that I didn’t have before.

This issue also included a huge feature on the “Future of Aion”, and some great interviews. I would like more player involvement (there is a feature on guilds, and a player of the month but what about some fan art or community events) but aside from that it is a pretty sleek neat looking digital magazine, and I don’t personally have too many complaints about this new revenue method.

  1. I think you are not the only one who bought it for the items only. The quality can be good, but is it really needed at all? Online gamers in general know their sources for guides/stuff and are usually ahead of printed or digital magazines.
